Sesame oil is pressed from sesame seeds. These are extracted from the seed of the sesame plant. These seeds can be black or white in colour. The oil is reasonably dark in colour and the flavour is intensely nutty.
Sesame is grown in tropical and subtropical areas throughout the world, but mainly in Africa, South Africa and Central America.
Colour and flavour
Sesame oil has a nutty flavour. Sesame oil is yellow in colour and it has an aromatic odour.
The nutty flavour of sesame oil makes it perfect as a lettuce oil for salads. It is therefore perfect for dressings or marinades. Sesame oil can also be used for sautéing, frying or flash frying. Just a couple of drops are needed to give dishes an extra aroma. It tastes fantastic in noodle dishes.
